THE STORY: The life of young Fiza (Karisma Kapoor) is pinned on just a single hope : that her brother Amaan (Hrithik Roshan), who has disappeared six years ago, will return some day. Both, she and her mother Nishatbi (Jaya Bachchan) are confident that some day, happiness will return to their lives. Fiza is a very resolute girl, which is why every time she comes across a dead-end in search of her brother, she tries even harder the next time. This trait of hers is particularly liked by Aniruddh (Bikram Saluja) who is in love with her. Apart from Fiza and Nishatbi, there is one more person who is anxiously awaiting Amaan‘s return : Shehnaz (Neha) who is madly in love with him.
In her quest to find Amaan‘s whereabouts, she employs the use of all media : even political leaders, but fails. Finally, she sets off on a mission which takes her through several uncommon situations and people. Her search finally comes to a dramatic and shocking end.
THE UPSIDE: Fiza is expected to take a bumper opening in every A-class station in India on the strength of hit music and the craze of Hrithik Roshan after `Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Sushmita Sen‘s dance number is also expected to bring in some draw, besides a lot of whistles in the auditorium. The movie seems to have something for everyone : Muslims may appreciate the film‘s Muslim background, especially the naath in praise of Haji Ali Baba, composed by A.R. Rahman; for the front-benchers, there is Sushmita Sen‘s `Mujhe Mast Mahaul Mein‘; youngsters will particularly like the `Aaja Maahiya‘ song; and so on. The film‘s publicity has worked up a good hype and has generated curiosity among cinegoers who are expecting something different in this film.
THE DOWNSLIDE: On the downside, the pairing of Hrithik Roshan and Karisma Kapoor as brother and sister may not go down too well with the audiences. However, this seems to have been handled well in the publicity : the audiences already know that the two are brother and sister beforehand. Like they knew that Shah Rukh and Aishwarya played siblings in `Josh‘. A sore point still remains -- Karisma is cast opposite Bikram Salluja, a newcomer, and Neha, who is not exactly an established heroine, is paired with Hrithik. Jaya Bachchan plays Hrithik‘s mother. The treatment of the film is also supposed to be ‘class‘ : the kind that appeals more to city audiences.
TRIVIA: Some days back Hrithik claimed that he appears in the film half way through. This had created a lot of flutter amongst the distributers of the film, who had paid a big sum for distributing ”a Hrithik film”. Hrithik had to later take back his comment saying that he appears throughout the film and has a longer role. Hopefully, the fires have been doused and the film will take a bumper opening.
